The insurance industry is one of the biggest in the world, with thousands of individual companies offering consumers hundreds of different insurance products to purchase. While the vast majority of insurance transactions fall under a few specific and well defined categories, there are those policies which lay outside of the realms of regular insurance services. Before I list some of the more esoteric types of insurance however, it is necessary to define what the most common forms of insurance in the 21st century are. The most popular insurance policies available today includes health insurance, life insurance, vehicle insurance, home insurance, and property insurance.
While not all insurance companies offer their customers flexible and esoteric policies, some firms have become well known to do exactly that. For example, Lloyds of London insurance company is one of the few firms who offer insurance for the life and health of famous figures, including actors and sports figures. Some other more unusual types of insurance include expatriate insurance, which insures people who are living away from home, kidnap and ransom insurance, pet insurance, and nuclear incident insurance. While some of these insurance categories are only provided by one or two specialised insurance firms, others are available through a number of different insurers in different countries.
Some other less common insurance policies include a little known type of insurance called locked funds insurance, which protects public funds against tampering and is issued jointly by both governments and banking institutions. Pollution insurance is another type of contract that is becoming more popular all the time in order to protect against the contamination of insured property. While most people are aware of these major insurance categories, and many have taken out at least one form of personal or business related insurance contract, it is amazing how many different types of policies are on the marketplace for consumers to purchase.
